COVID-19 Update 6-9-20

Dear friends and families,

We began posting our COVID-19 updates on April 20 in an effort to give our families and friends a place to refer to for up-to-date information. This transparency has been appreciated by those interested in what is going on in our communities during this challenging time.

Since we began posting these updates, we have stated that we would not give information on deaths due to confidentiality and respect for residents and their families. Providing numbers on deaths in our communities could provide “identifiable qualities” when read alongside local obituaries. However, The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Minnesota Department of Health have released this information, albeit with numerous errors. We feel our only choice is to release this data to provide accuracy.

You will notice below that none of our North Dakota locations currently have any COVID-19 positive residents. Eventide Fargo at one point had 14 positive residents, but now report no active cases. We believe the vast difference in numbers between Eventide Fargo and Eventide on Eighth today is due to the initial lag in testing we experienced with the Minnesota Department of Health. Immediately after the confirmation of the first case at Eventide Fargo, regular widespread testing of residents and staff began. The Minnesota Department of Health did not provide widespread testing at Eventide on Eighth until May 13, even though the first case was reported on April 17. The early, routine testing in our North Dakota facilities have proven key to mitigating the virus due to identifying asymptomatic cases. For the past three weeks, Eventide on Eighth has been able to do weekly testing and will continue to do so.

Many of those who come to live in our care centers have chronic, underlying health conditions, and in some cases they are terminal and on hospice care. The COVID-19 virus has been especially threatening to those who are on end-of-life care, although we have had hospice patients recover. Our condolences and prayers go out to our resident families who have lost their loved ones to COVID-19, and to all of our resident families who have lost loved ones. Caring for people at the end of their lives is what we do, but that does not make any of our residents less of an individual with a unique story. Please know that your loved one is more than a number to us, each of them matter.

The following is an update of active* cases, recoveries, and deaths at our locations:

Eventide Fargo Care Center: 0 active residents, 8 resident recoveries, 6 resident deaths, 4 active staff, 15 staff recoveries.

Eventide Fargo Senior Living Apartments: 0 active residents, 1 resident recovery, no resident deaths, 1 active staff, 2 staff recoveries.

*The cases reported on the North Dakota Health site are considered active if a resident or staff member have tested positive, but are no longer counted as an active case after 10 days. Eventide follows the CDC test-based strategy which classifies residents as recovered after two consecutive negative tests. Please refer to our updates for accurate information on Eventide’s active cases.

We will listen, learn and act

It has been difficult to know what to say about the murder of George Floyd and the protests that have followed, but silence is not going to change the racism that continues to haunt our communities and our country.

Recent events have opened the eyes of the world to the continued racial, economic and educational disparities that run through our country. Together, we mourn the painful and unjust death of George Floyd and recognize that peace is not possible when our team members, residents or communities live in fear and inequality.

For many years, we have been fortunate to employ a diverse team of people. People of color have been an important part of the growth and development of our organization. With that said, we know we can do better. We as an organization commit to listening, learning and acting as we move forward.

We are in the process of identifying what we can do to enable us to listen, learn and make change within our organization and in our communities. We look to our leaders at each of our campuses to provide opportunities for dialogue and change around these issues.

At Eventide we believe in working against racial inequality and injustice, not only as health care professionals, but as people who believe each person is made in the image of God.

Change must begin with each of us and we as an organization, and as individuals, must be willing to listen and be a catalyst for making a difference.

Sincerely,

Jon Riewer, President and CEO

COVID-19 Update 6-5-20

Dear families and friends,

Our residents have been living under our current restrictions for almost three months and with each day that passes, I worry about how the isolation is affecting them. I know it is also hard on the many friends and families who cannot visit their loved ones in our communities. As we look to the future and devise a plan for easing restrictions, we as an organization follow guidance from our state health departments.

The plan for reopening will likely look different at our various locations, being we serve residents in four counties. Our communities in Cass and Clay Counties will likely reopen at a slower pace than our Jamestown and Devils Lake locations, which have lower numbers of COVID-19 in their counties. I imagine the slow process for reopening is frustrating to residents and families, but we believe being cautious is important considering how contagious COVID-19 is and how a large number of those infected are asymptomatic. We must keep the safety of our residents and staff as our top priority.

North Dakota has announced a three-phased approach for reopening care centers, basic care facilities and assisted living communities in the state. All phases require a minimum of 14 days spent in each phase and the State Task Force must approve a facility to enter each phase. Steps in phased process may be altered or changed if any new COVID-19 cases are confirmed or additional risks arise.

Each of our North Dakota facilities are either in Phase 1 or making progress towards Phase 1, which advises the same restrictions and practices we are now following, including not allowing any visitors in our facilities, except for end of life situations. In Phase 1, limited group activities and communal dining are allowed, but residents must practice social distancing. Scheduled outdoor visits may occur between residents and their families while exercising social distancing. Everyone must wear clean face masks and perform proper hand hygiene. Each of our facilities will communicate how they intend to schedule outdoor visits once they are officially in Phase 1.

In order to move into Phase 2, a facility’s county must be at a “low-risk level” according to the state’s plan and there cannot be any new reported cases of COVID-19 throughout Phase 1. Once a facility enters Phase 2, visitation within the facility can be scheduled, and non-medically necessary trips outside the building may occur with the utilization of masks among residents and staff. Visitations will be restricted to one visitor per resident. Both the visitor and the resident will be required to wear masks.

To enter Phase 3, a facility’s county must be at a “new normal level” according to the state’s plan and there must continue to be no new cases of COVID-19 in the facility. At this phase, visitation within the facility is fully opened, communal dining and group activities may resume, and non-medically necessary trips may continue.

Minnesota guidelines advise us to continue our current restrictions and plan. As our communities begin to ease restrictions and move towards reopening, we will keep you informed.

COVID-19 Update 6-2-20

Dear families and friends,

As we continue to post these updates, we provide you the numbers we track within our organization. Please note that our numbers differ from those on the North Dakota Health site, health.nd.gov. We have been advocating for current long term care numbers to be reported on the site and changes have been made, but they may not match the numbers you will find in our reports. Until recently, residents and staff were lumped in one aggregate number, not accounting for recoveries, deaths, discharges or employees that left employment.

The cases reported on the North Dakota Health site are considered active if a resident or staff member have tested positive, but are no longer counted as an active case after 10 days. The North Dakota Department of Health is reporting recovered patients using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) time-based strategy, which classifies COVID-19 patients as recovered 10 days after their first positive COVID-19 test. Eventide is following the more thorough and stringent CDC test-based strategy, which classifies residents as recovered after two consecutive negative tests.

Regular testing continues at our campuses and many of our North Dakota locations have testing events scheduled throughout June. We are working to schedule another testing date for our Moorhead locations this week. We have learned through experience how crucial it is to conduct frequent testing as our North Dakota facilities have managed to get to low cases or zero cases of COVID-19 due to regular testing.

The following is an update of active* cases at our locations:

Eventide Fargo Care Center: 2 active residents, 4 active staff.

Eventide Fargo Senior Living Apartments: 0 active residents, 2 active staff.

Eventide Sheyenne Crossings Care Center in West Fargo: 0 active residents, 1 active staff.

Eventide Sheyenne Crossings Senior Living Apartments: 0 active residents, 3 active staff.

Eventide on Eighth Care Center in Moorhead: 21 active residents, 27 active staff.

The Linden at Eventide on Eighth Senior Living Apartments: 1 active resident, 0 staff cases.

Eventide Fairmont in Moorhead: 0 active residents, 2 active staff.

Eventide Jamestown Care Center: 0 active residents, 2 active staff.

The Heights at Eventide Jamestown Senior Living Apartments: No cases.

Eventide Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake: No cases.

Eventide Heartland Courts in Devils Lake: No Cases

Eventide Downtown Care Center in Devils Lake: No cases.

Eventide Lake Country Manor Basic Care in Devils Lake: No cases.

COVID-19 Update 5-29-20

Dear families and friends,

It has been almost three months since our organization began working to prevent and ultimately manage COVID-19. A lot has changed since early March when we implemented precautions and enhanced infection control measures. As I reflect on the past few months, I am proud of our team for stepping up to this great challenge and am grateful for what we have learned along the way.

Widespread testing and personal protective equipment (PPE) have proven to be our greatest tools to date. When considering the different scenarios at our campuses, it is clear that testing has made the difference in mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Eventide Fargo care center had its first positive resident on April 10. Eventide on Eighth care center confirmed its first positive resident on April 17. You will see in the numbers below that as of today, Eventide Fargo care center has two positive residents and Eventide on Eighth care center has 24. Eventide Fargo was able to start widespread testing soon after confirmation of their first positive case, while Eventide on Eighth had to wait.

Eventide Fargo was able to conduct widespread testing at its campus on April 17 and has since conducted three additional testing events. Eventide on Eighth was unable to test until May 14 and 15, creating a lag in identifying all positive cases. Until this testing was done, we did not have the knowledge needed to cohort all positive residents and furlough all positive employees. Now that regular testing is being performed at our Moorhead facilities, we are working to mitigate the spread.

Although the cases identified at both Eventide Fargo and Eventide on Eighth were only a week apart, the timeliness in testing made for different trajectories for each campus. Recurring widespread testing at Eventide Sheyenne Crossings and Eventide Downtown in Devils Lake has proven a successful tool as both campuses, which once had one and two positive residents, currently have zero residents with COVID-19. Testing also continues at our other campuses per recommendation of the North Dakota and Minnesota Departments of Health.

The following is an update of active and inactive cases* at our locations:

Eventide Fargo: 2 active residents, 7 active staff, 12 inactive residents and 13 inactive staff in care center; 3 active staff and 0 active residents in senior living apartments.

Eventide Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo: 0 active residents, 1 inactive resident, 1 active staff, 3 inactive staff in care center; 0 active residents and 3 active staff in senior living apartments.

Eventide on Eighth in Moorhead: 24 active residents, 27 active staff, 22 inactive residents and 14 inactive staff in care center; 1 active residents or staff cases in senior living apartments.

Eventide Fairmont in Moorhead: 2 active employees, 0 active residents.

Eventide Jamestown: 2 active staff and 0 active residents in care center; 0 active residents or staff in senior living apartments.

Eventide Heartland in Devils Lake: No cases.

Eventide Downtown in Devils Lake: 0 active resident, 0 active employee, 2 inactive resident and 2 inactive staff.

Eventide Lake Country Manor in Devils Lake: No cases.

Thank you for your continued support of our residents and staff.

Sincerely,

Jon Riewer, President and CEO

COVID-19 Update 5-26-20

Dear families and friends,

Over the past few months, it seems we experience change daily, if not more often. The recommendations and regulations that come to us from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Minnesota and North Dakota Departments of Health change as we learn more about COVID-19. Our teams must frequently learn and train on new procedures and they do so with diligence and determination.

The one thing that has remained constant is the most important – our dedicated staff delivering on our mission to provide quality care to our residents. As we continue to adapt to this new normal, our mission continues to be our guiding light.

We continue to do regular testing at our campuses. Tomorrow, our Moorhead locations will hold another testing event for residents and staff at Eventide on Eighth care center, The Linden senior living apartments and The Fairmont. Considering many individuals have been asymptomatic, yet tested positive, shows how important it is that we continue to test regularly.

The following is an update of active and inactive cases* at our locations:

Eventide Fargo: 2 active residents, 6 active staff, 12 inactive residents and 12 inactive staff in care center; 3 active staff and 0 active residents in senior living apartments.

Eventide Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo: 1 active resident, 4 active staff, 3 inactive staff in care center; 0 active residents and 3 active staff in senior living apartments.

Eventide on Eighth in Moorhead: 29 active residents, 26 active staff, 18 inactive residents and 13 inactive staff in care center; 1 active residents and 0 staff cases in senior living apartments.

Eventide Fairmont in Moorhead: No cases.

Eventide Jamestown: 2 active staff and 0 active residents in care center; 0 active residents or staff in senior living apartments.

Eventide Heartland in Devils Lake: No cases.

Eventide Downtown in Devils Lake: 0 active resident, 0 active employee, 2 inactive resident and 2 inactive staff.

Eventide Lake Country Manor in Devils Lake: No cases.

Sincerely,

Jon Riewer, President and CEO

COVID-19 Update 5-22-20

Dear families and friends,

Testing of staff and residents took place at several of our locations this week and it is our hope that this becomes a weekly event, specifically at our locations where COVID-19 is present. Eventide Downtown in Devils Lake completed 109 tests on Tuesday. Eventide Fargo completed testing yesterday with 286 tests. Eventide Jamestown held a testing event yesterday conducting 307 tests. Eventide on Eighth care center, The Linden senior living apartments and Eventide The Fairmont in Moorhead will finish today with a total of 815 tested.

Eventide Sheyenne Crossings will test its entire campus tomorrow, which will total around 380 staff and residents tested.

To date, we have completed 4,947 tests at all of our locations. I am pleased to report that Eventide staff administered all of the tests. I have had the opportunity to attend some of our testing events and it makes me extremely proud to see our teams come together to efficiently complete testing in addition to all of their other work.

Beginning June 1, the Red River Task Force will be testing our health care workers weekly. We will continue conducting resident testing at our campuses.

Regular testing continues to be our most effective tool preventing and managing COVID-19 in our facilities. Positive results allow us to furlough infected staff and cohort positive residents to contain the virus and stop the spread. The few additional cases identified through recent testing have been in asymptomatic individuals, which proves how critical it is that we test regularly.

The following is an update of active and inactive cases* at our locations:

Eventide Fargo: 4 active residents, 9 active staff, 11 inactive residents and 13 inactive staff in care center; 3 active staff and 0 active residents in senior living apartments.

Eventide Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo: 1 active resident, 3 active staff, 2 inactive staff in care center; 0 active residents and 2 active staff in senior living apartments.

Eventide on Eighth in Moorhead: 26 active residents, 18 active staff, 14 inactive residents and 8 inactive staff in care center; 0 active residents or staff cases in senior living apartments.

Eventide Fairmont in Moorhead: No cases.

Eventide Jamestown: 1 active staff and 0 active residents in care center; 0 active residents or staff in senior living apartments.

Eventide Heartland in Devils Lake: No cases.

Eventide Downtown in Devils Lake: 0 active resident, 1 active employee, 2 inactive resident and 2 inactive staff.

Eventide Lake Country Manor in Devils Lake: No cases.

Thank you for your continued support of our residents and staff.

COVID-19 Update 5-20-20

Dear families and friends,

As we continue our work in protecting our residents and staff during this pandemic, we pause now and again to celebrate the dedication of our employees and strong spirit of our residents. To date, we have had the opportunity to celebrate 30 recoveries among our residents and staff. Thank you to our #EventideHeroes who have provided quality care and continue to take on the challenges of combating COVID-19. Thank you to our residents and families who continue to support one another and our staff during this difficult time of restricted visits.

For the safety and health of our residents, we continue to follow recommendations from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Reopening Recommendations were released this week and it is recommended that for the time being we keep our current restrictions in place. I realize that these measures are unprecedented and isolation is a concern. Our staff works hard to come up with creative opportunities to keep residents engaged and as active as possible. While socialization is not the same as it was prior to the pandemic, there is more engagement than individuals would experience if isolated at home. Many of our campuses are working on offering hair care soon, reopening wellness centers and encouraging residents to go outdoors when the weather is nice. As conditions improve, we will be able to ease on restrictions, but for now, I hope getting a few of these normalcies back helps.

The following is an update of active and inactive cases* at our locations:

Eventide Fargo: 3 active residents, 6 active staff, 11 inactive residents and 11 inactive staff in care center; 3 active staff and 0 active residents in senior living apartments.

Eventide Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo: 1 active resident, 3 active staff, 2 inactive staff in care center; 0 active residents and 2 active staff in senior living apartments.

Eventide on Eighth in Moorhead: 26 active residents, 19 active staff, 13 inactive residents and 7 inactive staff in care center; 0 active residents or staff cases in senior living apartments.

Eventide Fairmont in Moorhead: No cases.

Eventide Jamestown: 1 active staff and 0 active residents in care center; 0 active residents or staff in senior living apartments.

COVID-19 Update 5-18-20

Dear families and friends,

We have received results from our first widespread testing at our Moorhead locations. We had many of the test results by the time I gave the update on Friday. The difference now being notification of positive results in two additional residents and one additional staff member. As is protocol at all of our locations, residents with COVID-19 are in an isolation area and staff are in self-quarantine.

Our focus at our locations with COVID-19 is to mitigate the spread of the virus. We will practice the enhanced infection control processes we have had in place and continue to follow recommendations from the CDC, CMS, and the Minnesota and North Dakota Departments of Health.

Regular and continued testing at all of our locations is a vital component to our plan to manage COVID-19. Testing is planned for this week at Eventide Jamestown, Eventide Sheyenne Crossings, Eventide Downtown in Devils Lake and Eventide Fargo. We are working to confirm a date to retest at our Eventide on Eighth care center in Moorhead and hope that it will be this week.

The following is an update of active and inactive cases* at our locations:

Eventide Fargo: 3 active residents, 5 active staff, 11 inactive residents and 11 inactive staff in care center; 3 active staff and 0 active residents in senior living apartments.

Eventide Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo: 1 active resident, 3 active staff, 2 inactive staff in care center; 0 active residents and 2 active staff in senior living apartments.

Eventide on Eighth in Moorhead: 24 active residents, 18 active staff, 12 inactive residents and 6 inactive staff in care center; 0 active residents or staff cases in senior living apartments.

Eventide Fairmont in Moorhead: No cases.

Eventide Jamestown: 1 active staff and 0 active residents in care center; 0 active residents or staff in senior living apartments.

Eventide Heartland in Devils Lake: No cases.

Eventide Downtown in Devils Lake: 1 active resident, 1 inactive resident and 2 inactive staff.

Eventide Lake Country Manor in Devils Lake: No cases.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Jon Riewer, President and CEO

COVID-19 Update 5-15-20

Dear families and friends,

We have received many of the results from our widespread testing at our Moorhead locations and for the first time feel we are in a place where we can best manage COVID-19 at our Eventide on Eighth care center. The knowledge we have gained from regular testing at our Eventide Fargo campus has enabled us to contain the virus and now we can work to do the same in Moorhead.

With the results we’ve received, we have confirmed seven additional residents with COVID-19 and three more staff. This means we currently have 27 active cases in residents and 20 active cases in staff in our Eventide on Eighth care center (9 results pending). There are no cases at The Linden or The Fairmont (some results still pending). Residents who are positive with COVID-19 are cohorted in an isolated unit and positive staff are in self-quarantine. Recoveries in staff and residents are identified after two consecutive negative test results.

Now that we have a clear picture of what we are dealing with at Eventide on Eighth, the most important next step is regular follow-up testing. As we have learned with our North Dakota locations, in order to continue to find success in containing the virus, we need to retest often. We are hoping to confirm a date for the next widespread testing soon.

The team at Eventide on Eighth care center, The Linden and The Fairmont completed over 800 tests on Wednesday and Thursday. They created an efficient operation and got the job done without utilizing any outside sources. I commend the team at Eventide on Eighth for the incredibly difficult work they have been doing over the past few weeks. They have done an incredible job in providing compassionate care while fighting the virus that has essentially been invisible until now.

Recurring testing continues in our North Dakota locations. Eventide Fargo care center has had three testing events and is scheduled to have another next week. Eventide Fargo senior living apartments has conducted widespread testing twice. Eventide Sheyenne Crossings has had two campus-wide testing days and our locations in Jamestown and Devils Lake have each had one widespread testing event. Retesting at Eventide Jamestown and Eventide Downtown in Devils Lake are planned for next week. In addition to mass testing, each campus regularly tests units where COVID-19 is present and residents and staff who are symptomatic. Regular testing at each of our facilities is our most important tool in combatting COVID-19.

The following is an update of active and inactive cases* at our locations:

Eventide Fargo: 3 active residents, 10 active staff, 11 inactive residents and 6 inactive staff in care center; 3 active staff and 0 active residents in senior living apartments.

Eventide Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo: 3 active staff and 1 active resident in care center; 0 active residents and 2 active staff in senior living apartments.

Eventide on Eighth in Moorhead: 27 active residents, 20 active staff, 8 inactive residents and 3 inactive staff in care center; 0 active residents or staff cases in senior living apartments.

Eventide Fairmont in Moorhead: No cases. (Some test results pending.)

Eventide Jamestown: 1 active staff and 0 active residents in care center; 0 active residents or staff in senior living apartments.

Eventide Heartland in Devils Lake: No cases.

Eventide Downtown in Devils Lake: 2 active staff; 2 active residents.

Eventide Lake Country Manor in Devils Lake: No cases.

Thank you to all those who advocated for testing in long-term care facilities in Moorhead. We are very appreciative of all of the effort that went into making this happen.

Sincerely,

Jon Riewer, President and CEO
