Shelby Olson’s story is one of passion, dedication, and a deep-rooted connection to caregiving. Growing up in a family of teachers and nurses, it was only natural for Shelby to find her calling in helping others. Inspired by her mother’s career as a nurse, Shelby began her journey in healthcare as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the age of 16. This early exposure cemented her love for nursing and set the path for her lifelong mission to care for others. Shelby is now the Senior Living Director/Resident Care Manager at Eventide Jamestown senior living apartments.
Shelby’s work allows her to form relationships with the residents she serves. She cherishes the opportunity to get to know each resident personally, learning their histories, families, and the unique traits that define them. For Shelby, these relationships are more than just professional connections; they are heartfelt interactions that enrich both her life and those of her residents.
At Eventide Jamestown, Shelby has found a workplace that mirrors her own values of compassion and community. She describes the environment as one where everyone—from residents to staff—cares for each other like family. This supportive atmosphere ensures that every individual who steps into the community receives the best care and experience possible.
Shelby finds immense fulfillment in her role at Eventide Jamestown. Her position allows her to blend her passion for providing care with leading a team of dedicated staff. She plays a crucial role in ensuring the community is a welcoming home for residents, and she delights in showcasing the positive environment to potential newcomers. The gratitude expressed by residents and the joy of making a difference in their lives make her work profoundly rewarding.
“I get to provide the compassionate care I have always loved to the residents as their nurse, but it is so much more to me than just that,” explained Shelby. “I also get to be a leader to an amazing group of staff, help them problem solve and be a part of making this the best home for our residents.”
Shelby encourages those considering a career in long-term care to embrace the rewarding nature of this field. She emphasizes that every role, whether in nursing, culinary arts, or environmental services, contributes significantly to the success of the community. The dedication and compassion of staff members are deeply valued, and the sense of family within the community makes the work both meaningful and impactful.
Outside of her professional life, Shelby enjoys spending quality time with her family. She loves playing Scrabble and cards, cooking, baking, and listening to audiobooks during her daily drive. Her family recently embarked on a new adventure by purchasing a hobby farm, affectionately named “Olson Acres.” Located just a few miles from Cooperstown, the farm serves as a place to instill valuable life lessons in their children through homesteading and sharing their harvest.
The farm, complete with farm kitties and dogs Daphne and Darby, provides endless joy and learning opportunities for Shelby’s sons, Tanner and Tucker. The family plans to expand their farm with chickens soon.
“The residents were very excited for us when we found our farm and it is often a talking point for them to give us advice on gardening and recipes they enjoyed making in their years on their farms,” said Shelby.
Shelby’s journey is a testament to the impact of compassionate care and service. Her dedication to nursing and the residents she serves, reflect her commitment to enriching the lives of those around her.
